A feeling of belonging is strong there—immediate and sure. The moment I arrive, there is a connection felt deep under my skin. A sense of awe pulls me into a theta brainwave state so pure that little can disrupt it. The twist of a vine, the curl of a palm leaf, the chatter of the macaw—all hold me in a way nothing else does.

I am home, I am alive!

What allows us to feel this type of connection—so pure and so real? Where in the body does this connection live? What if what we call “sensing others” is actually the body sensing itself in relationship?

The answer may lie in a web—a continuous web of tissue that surrounds and interpenetrates our muscles, organs, bones, blood vessels, and nerves. This system-wide sensory network is called fascia.

Introducing Fascia — A Sensory Field

Fascia is a network of connective tissue without beginning or end. It is largely made of collagen and elastin, giving it a strong tensile quality that is also capable of stretch and recoil. Between these fibers is a gel-like substance composed of water and hyaluronic acid, allowing for sliding between tissues, fluid movement, and shock absorption.

It surrounds virtually everything in the body and plays a role in holding everything in place. More than that, it forms a body-wide communication network—transmitting tension, pressure, and movement across the entire organism.

As researcher Bruno Bordoni describes:

“The fascial system has a solid and a liquid component, acting in a coordinated synchrony. Each cell communicates with other cells by sending and receiving signals…fascia has the freedom to respond to any stimuli (internal/external), thanks to the lack of predefined structural and fluidic patterns or negentropic behavior.”

This description gestures toward something important: fascia is not simply structure. It is relational.

The study of fascia’s role in biomechanics is now well established. Its role as a sensory field is still emerging.

What we know is that the nervous system is deeply intertwined with this tissue. Fascia is richly innervated, surrounding and containing more than 250 million sensory nerve endings. It continuously sends and receives information throughout the body.

What is now being explored more deeply is the sensing capability of this system.

Is fascia involved in how we perceive our place in the world? Does it play a role in our felt sense of safety, connection, or belonging?

Fascia Is Extremely Sensory

Studies led by fascial researcher Robert Schleip have shown that fascia contains a high density of sensory receptors, including mechanoreceptors, proprioceptors, nociceptors, and interstitial receptors. These detect pressure, movement, body position, and aspects of the internal state of the body.

Because fascia is continuous throughout, it forms something like a whole-body sensory field.

Through fascia, the body becomes an instrument that senses itself.

Enter Psychoneuroimmunology

It has long been understood that the immune system and the autonomic nervous system are in constant interaction. The study of this relationship is known as psychoneuroimmunology.

What is becoming increasingly clear is that fascia, the nervous system, the immune system, and our emotional states are deeply interconnected. We may now be able to measure aspects of this interaction—but on some level, we have always known it.

What Does This Mean?

How does this information help us? How does it help me?

First, it invites a shift in how we understand connection. We often recognize our interconnectedness with the wider world, yet we may overlook the complexity of connection within our own bodies. If the knee hurts, we search for a cause in the knee. If the heart aches, we turn to the heart. But for many of us—especially those navigating diverse concerns and syndromes—it becomes helpful to recognize that we are, at our core, a network of relationships. Body and mind are not separate systems, but part of a single, interconnected ecosystem.

To understand that the nervous system influences the fascial system and the immune system—and that these relationships move in both directions—opens a wider field of awareness. It deepens our capacity for interoception: the ability to sense the internal state of the body.

It also suggests that what happens in the mind—both conscious and unconscious—is not separate from the body, but continuous with it.

Trust

Secondly, this understanding points toward trust.

Trust in the intelligence of the body.

Trust in forms of knowing that do not always arrive as language or measurement.

Trusting our intuition.

What might shift if we moved through the world with a deeper trust in this internal intelligence? With the understanding that the body often knows before we can explain?

A Further Reflection

And if I might geek out a little bit here with another quote from Bruno Bordoni:

“Tissues use a stigmergic communication through a stochastic process to achieve optimal adaptation strategies… It is not only about a tissue, but it is, in fact, an awareness.”

Stigmergy refers to a form of indirect, decentralized coordination—where one can modify their environment, leaving traces that stimulate subsequent actions by themselves or others. It enables complex, collective intelligence without direct communication or planning.

This describes a kind of distributed intelligence.

For me, this vision of fascia as a living, responsive network—gliding, adapting, communicating—encourages a different, more expansive way of being.

To move more fluidly through the world.

To respond rather than resist.

To recognize that each action participates in a larger field. And perhaps, in doing so, to contribute—however subtly—to a more coherent and connected whole.

Walk well, and carry the jungle with you,
Karen

Our April salon-style meetup for community members will gather around the theme The Quiet Work of Connection—exploring the moment of reaching, the vulnerability of extending outward, and the ways these gestures become visible within the work itself.

Our next Rivers Speak in Voltage meetup will take place on April 23, 2026, at 1 pm EST. If this resonates, please consider subscribing as a supporting member.

Won’t you join us?

Rivers Speak in Voltage is a reader-supported publication. I’ve explored in my own life and art practice: how can creativity help us slow down, reconnect, and move through the world with more clarity and care?

Inside Focus & Flow, we’ll work with photography, papermaking, paper sculpture and expressive printing on handmade papers. We’ll also step outside the studio and into nature through gentle forest immersion practices that help restore focus and open up creative flow.

Together, these processes become a quiet toolkit for making – one that helps you return to your work with curiosity, resilience, and a sense of possibility.

If this feels like the right moment to deepen your practice and create space for both reflection and experimentation, I would love for you to join me.

Karen Olson
<p class="button-wrapper" It is a homecoming—an exchange buried deep in our cells. We recognize it at once,
as we know and are known.”

Karen Olson - Cultivating the Heart Sense

It was exactly one year ago today. I arrived at Macaw Lodge in Turrubares, Costa Rica, for a Forest Therapy Immersion. I attempted to find my bearings after the long, winding ascent up the mountain through washed-out ruts of red clay and cliffside hairpin vistas.

And yet, as we approached this isolated retreat center—nestled within a 12-acre botanical garden, surrounded by jungle paths and pristine waterfalls—I felt immediately at home.

My shared room was one of eight at the top of a spiral staircase. It overlooked a stream-like canal that flowed into a deep, acre-wide pond just outside the dining hall. A huge screen spanned one entire wall of the room—no glass, no enclosure—just floor-to-ceiling mesh connecting us to the outside world.

It was about 5 p.m., and the wildlife in the pond was actively pursuing dinner. Toads, frogs, birds, insects, and lizards joined in the symphony.

It was the cicadas that led the chorus. Their song was almost deafening—whirring, buzzing, clicking—a steady vibration rising from the air itself. Their call has been described as a cyclical rising-and-falling crescendo that feels tidal. I completely agree.

One might think such a high-pitched, extremely loud sound would drive a person crazy. But the opposite was true.

My nervous system had been running hot for months—truthfully, for years. But here, in this moment, I could feel it ratcheting down toward baseline. And it stayed there the entire week.

The rhythms and wave-like song of this small but powerful creature created a coherence between my heart rhythm and the rhythm of the jungle. An experience I will never forget.

What Is Resonance?

When something resonates, you feel it immediately. The nervous system feels met by someone or something. It might arise from the more-than-human world, a conversation, a concept, or even a warm and genuine smile.

We are constantly entraining to the world around us. When two systems interact, they can begin to match tempo or pattern. Two hearts can entrain. Our unique system can match step with another unique system. When this happens, all feels right with the world. We experience coherence.

I have recently been introduced to the idea of a baseline—or set point—in the nervous system. In a dysregulated state, the nervous system can run too hot or too cold. When either state becomes our norm for months or years, it can contribute to illness. This is because the nervous system is intimately connected to other systems in the body—cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, immune, and endocrine. The endocrine system in particular shapes how pain is perceived and influences nerve sensitivity and stress response.

No system in the body exists in isolation. It is all connected.

I quote:

“The remarkable thing about this set point is that it’s calibrated to meet our true needs (i.e. the needs of our lived reality). Unfortunately, factors such as illness, trauma and chronic stress can swing us away from this set point, and even change it entirely. If we exist in a hot or cold state for long enough for our brain to perceive it as our new reality, our set point will recalibrate to meet what it believes to
be our true needs.”

Jessica Maguire - The Nervous System Reset

It works both ways. Stressors can pull our nervous system away from baseline and contribute to illness. Illness itself can further shift our set point, creating a feedback loop.

At baseline we are not numb, nor hyper-alert. We are in a state of responsive presence—ready to meet the shifting demands of the day.

Running hot—hyper-alert, hyper-vigilant—is where I personally get stuck. My experience in the Costa Rican jungle showed me just how profoundly environment influences this state. It also set me on a path of inquiry.

If environment can dysregulate us, can it also regulate us? Can we craft environments that support our return to baseline?

The answer is yes. But we must seek this out. Leaving regulation to chance encounters or epic vacations is not enough.

“Strengthen the neural pathways for positive sensations by seeking out things that feel good. What you look for, you get more of… Let’s start scanning for pleasant sensations in the body throughout the day.”

Emma McAdam

And so I began to notice.

Four Doorways to Resonance

Sound

As the jungle illustrated so clearly, sound is one of the most accessible pathways to resonance. It is inexpensive, universally available, and an amazing potential for profound joy. It may be as simple as stepping outside to listen to birdsong, or as involved as learning an instrument.

What makes an experience resonate is not the sound itself, but how our body responds to it.

As a forest therapy guide, I offer this invitation that can be responded to while in the forest, a green space, or in your home:

Giving attention to your sense of hearing,
I wonder, what is the quietest sound you can hear.
I wonder if there is a melody to this place.
Is there a rhythm in the sounds around you?
I wonder if you can connect your inner rhythms with the rhythms of this place.
Perhaps you would like to add your own sound to this place—just loud enough so only you can hear it.

I might add, if you are in a place where you can vocalize more freely, sounding loudly can be cathartic—something we rarely allow ourselves to do.

Begin noticing sounds on a daily basis. Which sounds resonate with you. Make a list. These are materials—tools—you can return to when you need to find your set point again.

Rhythm

Rhythms—wave-like patterns—are everywhere. Music is a beautiful and immediate way to introduce rhythm. It can match our mood or gently shift it.

We can also create rhythm ourselves: tapping fingers, swaying, swinging arms, walking, knitting, stitching, folding paper. When you do these things, you are not just “doing something with your body.” You are giving your nervous system a predictable pattern to follow.

The heart is one of our primary rhythm-makers—an organ of sound and movement, intimately tied to breath and life.

I offer this invitation:

Make a fist with your hand, bringing that fist to the center of your chest and resting your closed fist in the center of your chest.
You might feel the sensation of your own beating heart.
What does the rhythm of your heart feel like?
What is your heart sensing right now?
What might your heart be reaching toward?

Movement

Moving too fast, trying to accomplish too much, stretching beyond my capacity—that is where I get into trouble. Intentional movement, however, is my grounding.

I can confuse hyperfocus with intentionality. They are not the same.

This awareness is ongoing work. I try to check in daily.

A combination of rhythm and movement supports proprioception—our sense of where we are in space—and interoception—our awareness of the internal state of the body. When both inner and outer sensing come online together, I return to equilibrium.

What does this look like?

Walking forward slowly and rhythmically, noticing hip alignment, the distance between my feet, the shifting of balance.

Walking backward—safely and slowly—placing one foot behind the other, torso aligned.

Swinging arms wide, overhead, behind me, reaching toward the ground.

Not mere repetition as exercise, but movement infused with awareness.

You also might try a slow wander for five to ten minutes. Notice what it feels like to move slowly. As you move, notice what is moving. Let your body recalibrate through deliberate motion.

Repetition

Creative repetition is especially helpful in the evenings or during difficult seasons.

I suggest having three types of creative engagement available:

A project requiring focus, innovation, and discovery.

A project building on those discoveries without requiring new invention.

A repetitive process—something you can do without much cognitive strain but that remains satisfying.

This third engagement might be stitching, sanding, simple paper preparation, light editing, organizing files, or planning. It may even be something unrelated to your primary body of work.

For me, repetitive process puts everything in a row. It packs the day up gently and puts the cares of the world to bed.

We are electrical beings—voltage moving through tissue, rhythm pulsing through muscle. When we find or make sounds, rhythms, movements, and repetitions that meet us and support us, we recalibrate. We remember our original tuning.

Resonance is something we can choose to notice and invite.

Perhaps the work is not to control the nervous system, but to surround it with patterns that allow it to settle. To listen for what feels like home. To cultivate the conditions where heart and world can match tempo again.

And then, gently, to stay in relationship with that song.

Our March salon-style meetup for community members will center around the idea of finding what resonates. Please consider subscribing as a supporting member. Our next Rivers Speak in Voltage meetup will be on March 26 at 1 pm EST. is now well documented that trees communicate with one another through airborne organic compounds and underground mycorrhizal networks. Over the last decade or so, a new generation of scientists has published groundbreaking research demonstrating that trees are, in fact, intelligent beings—capable of sensing, responding, and adapting in remarkably complex ways.

What is more, it is said that trees possess up to twenty different types of senses, or ways of perceiving and responding to environmental information. Trees detect light, pressure, and physical contact from animals and neighboring plants. They sense vibration. They track time, recognize pathogens, register moisture, temperature, and nutrient availability. Trees transmit electrical impulses through their tissues in response to injury, stress, or environmental change. Much of this sensing does not occur in isolation, but in collaboration—within a living community.

So we know that trees communicate with one another. And although we rarely want to admit it, we communicate with trees, often verbally.

Do you have a tree story?

Is there a particular tree or plant relationship that holds a memory for you?

Can you describe that relationship?

It is difficult to quantify or qualify this kind of connection.

“Life is no mere description. To experience life, to get to the heart of things, to see truly the face of Nature—not just to describe it through the framework of an illusionary, disinterested, objective observer—a nonlinear mode of cognition must be used. For life is, as Frank Herbert realized, always one step beyond logic.”

— Stephen Buhner

If we were to enter into a reciprocal relationship with a tree or a plant, we would need a different way of approaching that relationship—a different kind of sensing.

This idea of relationship that exists one step beyond logic was explored in a recent Emergence Magazine podcast interview with Monica Gagliano, Learning to Listen to Plants. I find it difficult to extract a single quote from the transcript because there is so much to unpack, but this passage offers a small glimpse:

“So if you want to know life, you need to have a taste for it. Literally, you have to eat it, which we do every day—especially with plants. In a way, if we could taste our food with awareness—if we could really feel that we are being remade all the time by these others, so alien and yet capable of creating something so familiar, our own bodies—our knowing would change. It would become more contemplative, less fixed on facts and binaries, less black and white.”

— Monic Gagliano

Still, the question remains: Do trees talk back?

And if so, on what level might this be possible?

The tree huggers among us want to know—do plants and trees initiate conversation? Do they respond to our inquiries? Do they offer knowledge of some kind?

Recently, while researching the relationship between sound and the nervous system, I found myself asking these questions more seriously. I had been experiencing low-level tinnitus after spending too many hours on the computer over several days. At the same time, I was mapping my nervous system—learning how my body responds to the world moment by moment, noticing patterns in sensation, emotion, thought, and behavior. (More on that later.) What I discovered is that the auditory system is deeply intertwined with the nervous system.

And then it occurred to me:

What if trees and plants communicate through imperceptible auditory signals designed to engage the nervous system? Our nervous system.

I began to form a working theory.

Trees emit subtle, low-frequency pulses—vibrations that align with human brainwave states associated with deep relaxation. Our nervous systems naturally synchronize with the rhythms of the natural world, which may explain why spending even fifteen minutes in nature can begin to shift brain activity. While plants produce sounds in frequency ranges that humans cannot consciously hear, it appears that our nervous system can still detect them.

In this way, trees may speak through multiple channels at once: chemically, through airborne compounds; vibrationally, through low-frequency pulses or sound waves; and electrically, through bioelectric signals moving through tissue.

Last year, a plant appeared in my small garden, quietly but insistently asking to be noticed. At first, I paid little attention. Yet its leaves shone in a way that reminded me of people who glow when they carry a secret—a secret not meant for everyone. As time passed, it continued to draw my attention, again and again. This was the first time I had felt this particular type of strong connection to a plant, and I wondered if I had finally lost my grip on reason.

Then came the research. I discovered that this plant holds an important place in herbal medicine—one that would have been particularly beneficial to me at that moment in my life. It became difficult to dismiss the feeling that it had, somehow, reached out.

A year later—and after a deep dive into the emerging field of plant intelligence, a subject only just beginning to be explored by the edges of the scientific community—I find myself sitting with a familiar uncertainty. Sometimes it is difficult to qualify what we know to be true. Perhaps we simply do not yet have the language. Or perhaps this deep connection we share with plants and trees will always resist words.

As technology advances and we move closer to actually hearing what trees may be saying, perhaps we can also learn to refine our own senses—to widen our attention, feel vibration and rhythm, to trust the body’s response over interpretation.

Then maybe—just maybe—we will hear what trees have to say.

Website

Paper Sculpture Workshop Italy 2026

Mentoring Sessions

Shop

Rivers Speak in Voltage is a reader-supported publication. perfectly. Beyond logic lies another form of cognition— familiar, yet elusive to describe or measure. Its nature defies understanding. Each encounter brings newness, alive with spontaneity, dynamic and deeply perceptive.

Not all things that hold us together are visible or tangible. Sometimes we simply know—there is a strong connection, a spark, a light that illuminates the bond between two beings. Even the small act of bending down to pick up a stone—the one that catches your eye, that one among thousands—signals a kind of recognition. That pull, that moment of attention, is the beginning of relationship. We start to form a kinship within shared presence.

Finding solace in nature is an integral part of understanding our inner lives. Reconnecting with the more-than-human world helps us form deeper relationships with ourselves and with our communities. Nothing in nature survives alone. By tending relationships with other species, we remember how to thrive—and how it feels to be fully alive. These sensory encounters guide us through a creative and restorative journey, opening the heart-sense and awakening intuitive awareness.

Whether we are conscious of it or not, we are already bound to the natural world. With careful attention and observation, we can rekindle that spark and keep the fire lit.

Nearly two years ago, during a period of recovery, I found myself drawn into companionship with the trees and plants surrounding my home. Each familiar presence arrived in its season, carrying both comfort and meaning. Born from daily closeness with these beings, my reflections revealed important learnings and awakenings. I began to sense that plants reach out—that they are not indifferent to our presence.

What began as quiet observation grew into an intimate awareness of kinship: a recognition that these beings are not separate from me, but companions in a shared web of life. Their presence reshaped my understanding of healing, memory, and joy. The natural world continues to teach me what it means to belong.

The glue between species—human and more-than-human alike—is rooted in a kind of body language. We are bound through rhythm, proximity, observation, and shared breath. In community, we grieve, care, sing, dance, and make. Sometimes, we are bound simply by being close.

Recently, I both witnessed and participated in a form of communication that was entirely new to me. I was invited into a rhythmic dance—an exchange without words.

Imagine a place far from the coast of Maine. People dressed in flowing garments of electric blue, orange, black, and yellow, a culture unfamiliar to my stoic New England sensibilities. The air was moist and heavy with heat; the sun strong and lingering. The scent of red dust permeated my senses. A steady drumbeat pulsed—constant and irresistible.

At first, I watched from a short distance. Dancers approached one another with repetitive, inviting movements—an offering of connection. The invited mirrored the gesture, holding eye contact while moving together in unison. Then one dancer moved on, inviting another, and another. They listened to one another through movement and gaze alone. This wordless exchange, transcending language, beckoned me.

I accepted the invitation gladly. My body struggled at first to find the rhythm of my partner; I moved awkwardly, trying to follow. Then something shifted. It clicked. My nervous system settled. My movement aligned with the beat of my heart, and suddenly I felt a sense of coherence with this person I had never met and could not otherwise communicate with. We smiled—wide, unguarded smiles—in mutual recognition.

That once-in-a-lifetime experience attuned me to the power of non-verbal communication. It reminded me that some forms of connection live beyond language.

To listen without language is to trust the body, the heart, and the space between us. The body knows how to listen—through rhythm, breath, and shared presence, we create coherence.

If this reflection resonates, I invite you to continue the conversation with me in the community space. In January, paid subscribers will receive a tutorial exploring adhesives and glues, followed by a live Zoom gathering on January 16 at 10 a.m. EST, where we’ll come together to reflect on the theme The Glue That Binds Us, a metaphorical exploration of adhesion, connection, and creative resilience.

Hope to see you there.
Karen

Subscribe now

Paper as Metaphor

Rivers Community Meetup Recap

Karen Olson

Recap - Rivers community meetup - Paper as Metaphor

Several members joined from two continents to discuss the concept of paper as metaphor. At the same time, I was researching anxiety, and I happened upon a book on forest bathing. Curious, I decided to test some of the theories that link time in nature with improved mental health. I documented my experience and whether or not my mental health and resiliency improved after time in the forest.

Walking alone with my camera, I moved slowly, taking in the nuances of light, atmosphere, and sound, allowing my senses to fully awaken. I was amazed by how much my well-being improved after just one hour of focused, attentive presence in the forest. Even once a week made a significant difference.

I discovered that there is in fact a friendship among trees. This friendship is multifaceted. When trees converse, the air becomes charged with chemical substances, fragrances, hormones, and subtle electrical connections. When I place myself in the middle of this conversation, I am illuminated by it. The charged atmosphere infuses me with a sense of well-being—emotionally, physically, and spiritually. I feel surrounded by the empathy that is the forest.

Last year, as I began speaking and teaching about our human-nature connection, I felt called to study with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides. During the certification course, I encountered the term heart sense. I instantly recognized the feeling—this intimate, resonant connection with the natural world—and knew it was more than just emotion or cognition. I wanted to understand it. What exactly was this sense? Could it be cultivated? Could someone learn to attune to it more deeply? Could it be articulated? Was anyone exploring it?

This curiosity led me into the writings of Stephen Harrod Buhner, Ben Page, Amos Clifford, and emerging research on the electrical and magnetic qualities of the physical heart. Stephen Buhner, in particular, has written extensively about the heart sense and plant intelligence—ideas I find endlessly fascinating.

Buhner writes:

“The tendency for heart cells to entrain with one another, merely because of the proximity of their electromagnetic fields, extends to any electromagnetic field that comes into contact with them. Just as the electromagnetic fields of two heart cells cause them to begin beating or oscillating in unison, when the electromagnetic fields of two hearts come together, they also begin to oscillate or entrain to each other. But this phenomenon extends even further. When the heart’s electromagnetic field and any other organism’s electromagnetic field—whether it has a ‘heart’ or not—are in close proximity, the fields entrain or synchronize, and there is an extremely rapid and complex interchange of information. As the two fields harmonize with one another, shifts occur in each electromagnetic field, producing significant alterations in the physiological functioning of each organism. For not only does each electromagnetic field alter, but the information embedded within each field is also taken in by the receiving organism.”

Recent research shows that the heart contains neurons similar to those in the brain, with more neural pathways traveling from the heart to the brain than from the brain to the heart. This two-way communication shapes our perception of the world. As we encounter our surroundings, the heart receives, encodes, and communicates information, maintaining a constant dialogue with the brain. Through its ability to both send and receive electromagnetic energy, the heart acts as a true organ of perception.

What this means is that when we connect with the natural world—simply by being near other beings—our “hearts” begin to beat in unison. They entrain. They synchronize. How incredible is that? And it doesn’t matter whether these more-than-human beings possess a physical heart. They exist as open energy systems, continually interacting with other energy systems, including ours.

The heart sense is not a metaphor, nor is it elusive or abstract. We feel it tangibly in the body and understand it in the deepest parts of ourselves. It is music and rhythm—the pulse of existence. It is our capacity to feel, connect, learn from, and understand beings beyond ourselves.

This sense represents a unique form of intelligence that extends beyond our five conventional senses. Through intentional sensory experience, we can cultivate a heart-centered awareness that reveals our deep kinship with the living world. This inner knowing awakens intuition and imagination, drawing us toward a more coherent and reciprocal relationship with our surroundings.

In cultivating the heart sense, we become known by other beings—and in turn, we come to know them more deeply.

Rivers Speak in Voltage is a reader-supported publication. I had long known that my nervous system was in a state of dysregulation, even if I didn’t fully understand what that meant or how to address it. What I did know was how it felt: like an electrical storm inside my body—nerves on high alert, short-circuiting, pulsing, painful muscle spasms, burning, flooding, a hormonal soup. I’ll spare you the rest of the list.

Over time, I learned that our nervous system communicates through specialized cells that transmit electrical signals.

“Our body is a portable electronic device. Electronic devices need a battery. Battery packs can lose their charge or stop holding a charge.”

—Dr. Jerry Tennant

Battery packs can also short-circuit.

A healthy cell typically operates at about –25 millivolts. When a cell needs to regenerate or repair tissue, it must reach closer to –50 millivolts. Muscles are one such “battery pack.” The contractions of the heart generate currents—tiny electrical pulses that travel through the conductive tissues of the body. With every beat, a charge is created. Muscles contract when they receive electrical impulses from nerves; these impulses are messages traveling along living wires, creating a continuous electrical flow.

The human body is, at its core, an electrical organism. Every thought, movement, heartbeat, and sensation relies on subtle electrical impulses created and conducted by our cells. Because we generate electrical signals, we also create measurable electromagnetic fields (think EEGs and EKGs). This isn’t metaphoric—it’s biology, the very mechanism that keeps us alive.

“The information embedded within cardiac pulses alters central nervous function in behaviorally significant ways. There is, in fact, a two-way communication between heart and brain that shifts physiological functioning and behavior in response to the information exchanged.”

—Stephen Buhner

More on that later.

But at this point, I could sense it: something in my system wasn’t firing correctly. Something in the circuitry was disrupted.

So down the rabbit hole I went.

Could my body repair this disruption? Was there something I could do? Was anyone talking about this?

Today, more and more people are talking about it. In the last decade, breakthroughs in biological technologies have allowed us to understand systems of the mind and body that we could previously describe only metaphorically. And alongside this science, ancient modalities—once dismissed—are now being understood at a physiological level.

Enter energetics.

At its simplest, energetics is the idea that the things we do, say, experience, and believe can either add to or deplete our body’s ability to function and repair. Diet, movement, air, light, water—all of these matter, of course. And then there is earthing. Research now shows measurable nervous-system benefits when we touch the earth with our bare feet or hands or connect with more-than-human beings (trees, plants, rocks).

Trees, in fact, engage in an exchange of electrical connections. We benefit when we place ourselves within that exchange.

So metaphorically—and also quite literally—we can say that the things we do or don’t do can raise or lower our voltage. I love thinking about it this way. It cuts through the noise and makes it easier to recognize what truly supports our energy and well-being.

And, by this point in my research, I was becoming acutely aware of how my thoughts were affecting my physiology.

“Chronic conditions are associated with low cellular voltage. That’s how emotions make us sick—by dropping the voltage in the circuit they’re hanging out in.”

—Dr. Jerry Tennant

How we think, what we focus on, what we engage with, and what we allow ourselves to ruminate over—these all shape our physical health. This is no longer conjecture. It’s neurobiology.

My father had many sayings he repeated throughout my childhood. “You gotta think positive. Think what you doing,” he’d say, again and again. I always thought he was a little off his rocker. It turns out he was ahead of his time.

Biologists now understand that our thoughts can actually change genetic expression.

Enter energy psychology—an umbrella term for approaches that integrate psychological principles with the body’s energy systems: bioelectric, electromagnetic, biochemical. Emotions, trauma, and beliefs are stored in the body and shape the flow of energy. Every emotional state carries its own neurochemical and electrical pattern.

So what do rivers have to do with any of this? As in Rivers Speak in Voltage?

Just as time in the forest nourishes the nervous system, water—especially moving water—offers even more. The electrical charge present in the air near waterfalls, rivers, and ocean waves supports regulation, raising serotonin levels and activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Being in the presence of these negative ions actually shifts stress chemistry in the body. Putting your bare feet in water increases stable cell membrane potential. The experience can somatically lift you out of that high-alert state so many of us live in—and the effect lingers.

How much can it help? How often do you need to be near moving water or in the presence of trees for it to have an effect? I encourage you to discover this for yourself. Conduct your own small case study. Test it out. Record the outcome. What have you got to lose? You may be surprised by the results.

Rivers Speak in Voltage is a reader-supported publication. It has been quite a journey to reach this moment, and whether you’ve just found your way to this space or have been with me from the very beginning, I’m grateful you’re here.

The beginning of what?

That part is harder to name. For some time now, I’ve been traveling through a layered journey of discovery—one rooted in creative exploration, yes, but also in a deep curiosity about the human psyche. I wanted to understand what was happening inside my mind and my heart. I wanted to reclaim aliveness.

Fast forward to today. As a forest therapy guide, I’ve learned just how essential our relationship with the natural world is—for our emotional steadiness, our physical well-being, and our sense of belonging. My study has led me deep into the inner workings of the brain and the ways our modern lives have left many of us stretched thin, disconnected, or overwhelmed. I’ve gone from a woman who struggled to walk to someone who could hike a long, demanding trail. Along the way, I’ve come to understand that so much of our healing is about voltage—about the electrical and magnetic connections that pulse through everything, including us.

During a period of recovery, I found myself drawn into companionship with the trees and plants near my home—magnolia, balsam, motherwort, and pine—each one arriving in its season with a presence that carried both comfort and meaning. Through this daily closeness, I sensed an important learning taking shape: an awakening I hadn’t known I was waiting for.

Spring opened with magnolia blossoms, teaching me about resilience and the strength of family ties. Summer unfurled in the shade of pines and alders, where Himalayan balsam flourished and filled the days with exuberant color. In autumn, motherwort appeared—quiet, unassuming, but insistent—offering the reminder that what we need often reveals itself only when we are ready to notice. Winter brought a spacious stillness, a pause that invited me to rest inside silence.

What began as simple observation became an intimate awareness of kinship: a recognition that these beings are not separate from me but companions in a shared web of life. Their presence reshaped my understanding of healing, memory, creativity, and joy. My current project, Kinship, continues to unfold from this place—a living record of relationship, a testament to what the natural world teaches about belonging.

And this brings me to you.

Along this path, I’ve come to understand just how essential our human connections are. After all, we are nature—no less alive, responsive, or interwoven than the landscapes that hold us. In this space, I hope to open doors to connection, conversation, and creative exchange. My wish is that Rivers Speak in Voltage

becomes a place where curiosity is welcomed, where stories and imagery invite reflection, and where we can remember—together—what it means to feel deeply alive.

I’m so glad you’re here. Let’s begin.

Rivers Speak in Voltage is a reader-supported publication.
